He smiles that doggy kind of grin...

Words come at you everyday; Poems are just a little more organized in what they have to say!

Poems: Get a bad rap...usually considered flowery, soft, artsy, etc. Maybe...some of that is true. But...put in the right context...Poems can get a point across with underlying stealth and quiet intelligence. Perhaps...even better than the average writings we see daily. This is Mr. Manly Poetry Man's Quest. To Boldly Go Where No Poetry Man has Gone Before and...Boldy Write Some New Poems...? Sometimes Poems need to have their energy harnessed and then put on display. With that I bring you:

"Peace, Love, And Labrador Retrievers"

I said, "A Country Boy at heart...I will always be,
Stuck here in the day to day cycle of a Gulf Coastal Big City.
You can say, "You're Juz' a City Boy"...till your face turns blue,
Soon…I'll be putting my cabin in right next to some Country Boy...Like you!

"Hey, Buddy...Having my feet in the City...Mind on the Country...is not all that new for me,
"Down-Home Boy", You've got plenty of room for us...City dwellers...out here in the Coun-try.
I'll be moving here in a little while...Ready to make my stake on the Promised Land.
For now...I'm just doing the "working" thing...trying to make a living the best I can."

Thinking it won't be long now; Time has come for me to widen my spread.
All this talk of the Country has gone and went...straight to my head.
Thoughts take me out where my dogs can all roam and be free,
Along with my soul...and my wife's... together me and my "Honey".

To view each new day...while looking over the top of my coffee cup,
Enjoying the quiet woods around...taking shape as the sun comes up.
And listen to my dogs...out running all around.
Barking to awake the morning...patrolling every inch of ground.

Knowing that my destiny lies waiting,
Thinking of that future morning...and anticipating,
I look down to the Labrador sitting next to me now...
And tell him, "It won't be too much longer...Anyhow!"

He smiles that doggy kind of grin...
His thoughts...like mine...have also been...
To meadow fields with birds ready to take to flight...
To waterbanks where crickets and frogs chirp all through the night.

"Oh...City Dog...Yes...I know," I look down to him and say,
"You were born to run...all day in the sun...and to be free to go play,
And look at us...at home behind these walls...Not fair...our yard's too small,
Don't worry, my friend...Country life beckons us...and "Yes"...I too, hear it call!"

A dog either knows exactly what you say...or perhaps could really care less...
Deep down their natural instincts prevail...they understand perhaps more than the rest.
This Labrador...is ready to take on the world away from here...Look at him wag his tail.
What concern of human things does he have...To afford to go...or If the dream can fail.

So...I think I'll work a little harder...a little longer...and dream a little more...
And let my Lab...go back to sleep..."cooped-up" on the laundry room's floor.
No need to get all worked up...Must make a good living in the big city...For us "big believers",
Time to get back to it for another day..."Peace, Love, and Labrador Retrievers".

I love labs.

I also agree with your premis that poetry need not always be hearts, flowers and hallmark cards. Hip-hop and rap lyrics are the hard edged poetry of today's youth. Songs are poetry set to music and not always pretty. Thank you for your refreshing point of view.

Thanks to all who have commented on this poem. C.C., AtendE, and Disturbia. C.C.: All dogs are great. AtendE: Glad you liked it. Disturbia: Yeah...what you said...Poetry can get a message across with an edge to it...and it does not have to sound or look like a Hallmark card...either! Ha...that's good stuff right there.

Poetry can still be that flowery, artsy form...that some folks love...but that don't mean that it can not also be used to bring in the "heat"(...or even a "slider")! Respectfully, MPM

Thank you fergiesgirl for sharing your comments on this hub devoted to Labs and being out in the country. The two are synonymous in my book!

A great Labrador Retriever poem! I enjoyed it very much as it speaks to our Lab with all of her ancient coast of Labrador instincts that let loose when we take her up to the foothills just outside of Denver.

juneukid: Thank you...very much for commenting on my Poem about "Labrador Retrievers"...I know that Lab of yours loves taking to the Foothills. They were "Born to run...all day in the Sun!"...afterall. (And...with their instincts...they could swim all day...as well!) Appreciate you reading this one. Humble Reghards, MPM

Michael Shane: Thanks for your comment, Michael. Labs are the best. Right now...I have two Lab-mixes...which get in about as much trouble...and have the same energetic personalities as a normal Lab. They're both a blast. "I never met a dog I didn't like!" twist on an ol' Will Rogers quote. I hope you get a Lab...real soon...they are pretty awesome. Thanks for stoppin' in and reading this one: "Peace, Love, and Labrador Retrievers"...MPM signing out.

Loveslove: Glad you enjoyed this poem. Labs are so much fun...and great dogs. I had one for 15 years. He was so full of life...that I think I learned a thing or two about it from him! Labs are beautiful animals. I know you miss "Susie"...Mine was named "Okie"...and is missed still. I have two Lab mixes now...and they are also great dogs! Thanks for reading and commenting on this poem called: "Peace, Love, and Labrador Retrievers!" Best of Regards, MPM
