Oh, Men of Deeds…Not Word

Oh, Great and Solid Men…who stand like Mountains on this planet…

The Ones who came before us…whose feet were firmly planted!

You know them by their Actions…more than any other thing…

Men of substance that stand out…Measured by the type of game they "bring" ,

Like an Oak that still stands by the shore after a hurricane…

Or an Earthen Dam that held after a torrential amount of rain,

These Men of Deed speak volumes…when they have not said a word,

Do you find this so amazing…Am I speaking of the absurd?

A great Man is not attributed by what he says…though it certainly helps.

He makes his statement loud and clear by what he does…not by puppy whelps!

Anyone can talk…and thus by talking…make themselves great…

Oh, Men of Deed are measured by actions …Not by boasts that always inflate.

Men of Deed speak softly…and carry a “Big Stick” (*)...

Men of Words alone…often run when trouble comes…They run away quick!

Oh But...Men of Deed stand there ground...

Often...when no one else is anywhere to be found !

Men of Deed...And A Few Well Put Words!

Oh...of Great Men of Deed...

That arrive just in time at our hour of need.

Do not hasten...when you have decided your course...

You are at your best...when things are at there worst.

Vanquish the enemy before you...Stay true to what must get done...

No one promised you a rose garden...you're not in it just for fun.

While others talk and contemplate...

You forge ahead...and Charge against perceived destiny's fate !

When others balk...and drag their feet...

You make sure the rubber meets the street !

Oh, Men of Deed...Not Words...Thank you for taking control at your appointed hour...

Stick to your guns...and not empty promises...Words alone can swiftly sour.

But you...have set action as the solution...by your steadfast determination...

Men of Deed have striven in the past...to bring us to this ultimate fruition.

Who is to say...whether each Men of Deed should've turned left...should've turned right ?

Just thank your lucky stars.and heaven above...when you lay your weary head down this night.

That Men before you...Performed with Deed...instead of talking about things forever and a day...

I know that I'm damn glad for them...those Men of Deed...that were there to help pave the way.

Consider the consequences of things left to chance and thorough discussion analysis...

It plants more seeds for wanton attacks for those who sit in "wishy-washy" paralysis.

I call upon you...Men of Deeds...Not Words; I have seen so many here in this generation...

No time to render out a why...Men of Deeds be ready...I know you need no further explanation.

No Monday Morning Quarterbacks here...Men of Deed "Git R' Done"(**)...when "Failure is not an Option"...

Men of Deed...Forget all the talk, talk, talk...Just go ahead and put your plan right into motion !

Manly Poetry Man, great job, and great deed. Oft' times credit is not issued where it is due, and true words make well many men, as well as quell and bring peace to many distubing perceptions and frustrations. Words can be mighty indeed in this regard, but deeds are the real grit of even the best fashioned discourse, as you have humbly displayed. May the personnel of action reap a just reward of the honourable words they represent and manifest in deed - they have earned it.

Timothy Donnelly: Thank you for your great and witty comment on this poem of "Men of Deed". I am so inspired by those who on the moment when they were called on...performed brilliantly...and to the very best of their abilities. I have known a man such as this...and his picture is posted above. He inspires me...long after he is no longer with us. He inspires me by his Actions!

I've heard it said...not sure who said it...but we literally do "Stand on the Shoulders of Gaints!"

I think you said it well: "May the personnel of Action reap a just reward of the honourable words they represent and manifest in deed." Amen to that one! Couldn't say it any better, my friend...Thanks...and appreciate you stoppin' in to read this one! Sincere Regards, MPM

Morning Steve...This is a wonderful poem that reminds us that words mean nothing unless backed up by action...One of your examples of men of action, Teddy Roosevelt, wrote a speech called " The Man in the Arena " that clearly defines the difference.

Chesty Puller, when asked why the Marines were retreating from the frozen Chosin, said: " We're not retreating, we are just advancing in another direction "....4 Chicom divisions lay in the way of that " other direction " which the First Maine Division, along with some British and Turkish forces, destroyed in route...No parsing words for him...

Your Leroy is a Marine that I cherish and would have been honored to have served with him...His memory will always live in our hearts...Larry

maven 101: Good Morning...Right back at'cha...and Good to se ya'. I have been very fortunate enough to hear accounts right from some of the "Frozen Chosin" themselves. I have to admit that whole episode of the famous retreat is precisely as you stated in your quote from Chesty himself..."advancing in another direction!" Truly the American fighting force is a hard one with which to contend...no matter the numbers of the other side....or what the elements so choose to throw at them. And on a UN police action to protect S. Korea...HHmmm...how many went into harm's way? This action should be legendary in our proud heritage...but I guess it would be acting like we are "big meanies" if we discussed it in our American History classes...with more than a simple two sentence statement regarding that it took place! OOPS...How could I dare speak of America in a manner that sounds like I'm proud when we rattle our sabre! Bad, Bad...politically incorrect me! But then the American fighting forces have always given it their best...despite the odds...and limitations pre-set upon them...in conflicts.

With that said...Thank you for your comment...my friend. Larry, you are the epitome of "Once a Marine; Always a Marine"...and I'm damn proud to know such a Marine... through this here Hubpages! You know...I had to add Leroy...because he is the greatest person I have ever known that put action in place of contemplating and discussion...when the moment was most dire! Thank you, Leroy! And, Thank you for your great comment, Larry...(and for the reading of said poem)...Humbly, your friend, MPM

This was in my e-mail today 5-17-12...thought it was worth sharing. From: Brooke Rollins; President & CEO; at the Texas Public Policy Foundation: "The theologian Charles Spurgeon once praised "men in whom the truth displayed itself in deeds rather than in words" -- "acta non verba," in Latin. Deeds, not just words. At the Texas Public Policy Foundation, we agree. You already know that we stand apart in our focus on action over rhetoric -- and our willingness to take a stand on principle regardless of popularity."
