I Ask Why Under A Midnight Sky

I ASK WHY UNDER A MIDNIGHT SKY

“Why?”…“Oh, Why?”…“Why…?”

“Do you not hear me when I cry?

Have you not heard my longing or my sigh?

Can’t you see that I feel as though I would die?”

This sadness that I conquer takes a lot of me,

My happiness I had…moved on...‘Cause it wanted to be free!

I am left with only these things that hurt a great deal,

They tug at me from both sides…till I don’t know how I feel.

It makes me feel a little nauseas….in a really good sort of way,

No…not really…I’m just trying to stay positive in what I say.

There is a purpose for each man in his time under the sun…

But looking up at this moon…it seems as though…mine is done.

The world around me has turned out all the lights…

How many times have I sat beneath this moon? How many nights?

How many more before my world starts to turn…once again,

I hold nothing against you…O’ Lord…you’re still my friend!

Just…that I don’t feel nothing, nada, or anything…

Or have one good memory left with which to cling,

If I should feel so hopelessly depressed…and yet so sad,

Then…Why on Earth do I feel so overwhelmingly glad?

I ask you why Lord…under a midnight sky.

Why do I do good that goes unnoticed…Why do I try?

Why do I sin against you? When I am pure before you all is right;

But…I don’t feel that way tonight.

For this night…I’m slightly upset…and momentarily numb,

I don’t feel all that smart…though…I know I’m not dumb.

My feelings…are just not there,

I have a lot of doubts…and yet don’t feel enough to care.

Under the midnight sky…I look to you…and I ask why?

I told myself I’m not depressed though that may be a lie.

With a heavy heart that yearns to have new joy,

I look to you without another word left to employ.

To stare into this moon so bright,

And watch the few stars around it…in its’ light.

To see that I am still standing…still breathing,

To see that I’ve known joy…and I’ve known grieving.

Makes me confused as to why…

I stand below you in the midnight sky. (*)

“Oh Lord!” I start to open my mouth and say,

Then…my words in the night slowly fade away…

(*) The Poem Author would suggest that some things are made clear in the darkest hour.

Beth100: Wow...I'm glad that you are moved by this one. Thank you for stopping in, reading, and commenting.

Robin: It is a sad poem through most of it...until everything fades away in the night sky. Have you ever felt that feeling of peace at night...even for no reason?

manlypoetryman Hub Author 2 years ago

Frieda B: Yes...Thank you for your comment, as well. Glad you also found it moving. I think you're right....this type of quandry does come up alot in life. I think that is "why" it is easy to search up in the sky for answers. The Peace of the night...is an answer within itself!

we all go trhough rough patches and everytime we do, we all look up to the sky - there must something infinitely bigger than our problems, even bigger than us. Thanks for sharing :D

Cris: Yes Sir, Totally agree...during the rough patches...or the times in our lifes when we question what the heck are we doing here...we have to look for something bigger than ourselves. It also helps to see that the Sun and the Moon are still turning...there will be another tomorrow...despite how we feel. That is a good time to come to grips with the problem. Humbly, MPM. Another great poem, a little sad, but [Train of thoughts today] it left me thinking.

Sad...Yes! Or an Imagery that is Peaceful enough to numb your sadness? I would hope it is the latter! I believe that everything in the "Midnight Sky"... eventually can win over your "train" of "thinking"... Darknlovely. Especially on a Moonlit Night where the Moon can cut it's way through the Darkness! Thank you for this great comment.

I truly related to this poem, it was intense and resonated with me. Thanks for writing it, you are very good at expressing emotions.

Thank you erin for that really great comment. However...the awesomeness of the Midnight Sky by itself...gets top billing for this one. A "Manly" poet can only hope to capture a Midnight Sky in words...at all...let alone as you say. Thanks again. Glad this poem was able to resonate with you.

Thank you, pinkhawk...That is awesome...Look to nowhere in the middle of the night...and see what you find while contemplating your surroungings? Answer: You find yourself standing there...and a whole lot more...if you really look around! Thank you for going through the motions...that is this poem! Sincerely, MPM.

I like that I was left with a feeling of hope.. that nothing that happens ever has to be the end of it. Good poem!

Manlypoetryman, I'm glad I've just now found this poem, timing is a mystery itself, you speak so well to so many asking why at times, and for sure me, and it leaves me somehow comforted, not so alone in those searching thoughts and moments of asking why.

KFlippin: I've been away for a few days...and was delighted to see your comment here on this one. Timing is everything! Sometimes...(I feel...IMHO)...that we look above all alone...to ask why things are a certain way...this or that direction...and forget that they could be much worse! When reminded of that...suddenly everything begins to come clear...and there is no more need for us, me, myself, anyone...to continue on in depressed thought. However...there ain't nothing wrong with asking "Why" either...I would have to say! Appreciate your reading this one and leaving this great comment! Signed, Manly Poetry Man. Best Regards to you!

kim039: Thank you for this comment. I am glad that you stopped in for a read of this poem. The Midnight Sky and its' Moon...just hang their in dark space...looking down at us. Something tells me...since the Moon has been around for awhile now...that it knows "first-hand' the answers to our questions of "Why"...Ha...Now, if it could only speak! Humblest regards to ya', MPM
