NOW...YOU MIGHT WONDER: WHAT IS A "MANLY" POETRY MAN WRITING ABOUT KID'S LAUGHTER FOR ?

WELL...JUST HEAR ME OUT...AND I THINK YOU WILL LIKE THE MEMORY OF A GOOD COUPLE OF LAUGHS...BACK WHEN WE WERE KIDS.

AFTER ALL: MY POETRY IS ABOUT A MAN DEALING WITH THE HUMAN CONDITION KNOWN AS HAVING A HEART...HA! YOU'RE BIG ENOUGH TO TAKE A FEW KID'S LAUGHTER...AREN'T YA' ?

WELL...AREN'T YA' ?

(See Poem Below:)

But...I Can Hear The Children's Laughter

As I sit here at this desk...crunching a number or two...

I think back to times long ago...when I could laugh the whole day through.

When I would laugh towards the treetops...just for fun...

When I would go through life...all day...out in the Sun.

When...I could hardly think about what was ahead...

You laughed...and laughed...until your face turned red.

And...in a distant field of a Camp somewhere...

A field sits briefly empty...in the cold Winter air...

Yet...I can still hear the laughter there...

I hear the kids enjoying a Summer day...out there...without a care.

It seems our lifes get busy...and so dang entrenched into our things...

That we fail to look back...at all the laughter...our young heart sings.

We know of good things that make us laugh...down deep on the inside...

But...we trod on and on...the laughter our "kid" heart had inside...has run to hide.

We look to each other...and discuss in a professional manner...

And forget about the times we exchanged in joyful "kid-like" banter.

Now...Grey are our insides...like that of a cadaver...

From wasting away in serious concerns...and in anger.

What we need is to spend some time back out in the Sun...to go run and play...

And...remember the laughter we once had...laughing all through a Summer day.

With friends around of all kinds...the cool ones or the dorks...and the ones we thought so highly of...

The friends you could laugh all day with...the fun that echoed in your group...up to the sky above.

Our laughter may have now grown faint over so many, many years...

Plus...our sadness may have grown and grown...from so many, many tears.

But...I Can Hear The Children's Laughter...When I see in Winter Off-Season...a Camp's vacant field...

And for one moment the laughter encompasses my soul...and I laugh renewed...and momentarily healed !

The End.

Hey There...Friend! For The Reason This Particular Poem Came About....Please Read Below:

Have you ever visited a Busy Summer Camp Place in the Dead of the Winter Off-Season? All is Very, Very Quiet...But, I Could Still Hear The Children's Laughter !

A SMALL FOOTNOTE TO THIS POEM:

When I was younger teen...and in High Scool and also: College, I spent many Summers of my younger years working with kids...at Summer Camps...and a few Day Camps. I worked with kids of all ages. I spent probably about 9 Summers or so...working with kids...as a seasonal hire: Camp Counselor. Working as a Summer Camp Counselor was a pretty fun job...and I always thoroughly enjoyed it. And...I enjoyed working with the various other Staff that were around my age...every Summer...also.

Yes...Working as a Summer Camp Counselor was a fun job to have...always! Plus...the times back when I worked at Summer Camp's...were somewhat simpler..for sure. Kids could ride horses without wearing bicycle helmets. Kids enjoyed swimming in a lake...all day long. And...Kids could handle an overnight hike and campout or two...(where the only thing they had to sleep under...were the stars). Kids actually enjoyed being outdoors and patricipating in all kinds of outdoor activities...away from the television set (Now...it would be: the computer or portable game players). I can honestly say that I am truly grateful for the time spent working around kids of all ages...at Summer Camps...back in those days...and it did help to set the "theme" behind this particular poem topic.

But, as I look back on this time in my life...there is one thing that stands out...and I'm not just saying this for the purpose of this poetry: "I Can Hear The Children's Laughter!"

MPM -- There is no better sound than children laughing, unless it is you laughing along with them. Children (at least mine) still love the swimming hole, staying outside in the sun and riding through meadows of flowers, bees, horse flies and mosquitos. lol Oh, I can smell the summer breeze and hear the laughter too. Thank you MPM, you're the best! xox

katiem2: Now...that is getting into the spirit of this poem...Thank you! It does kind'a feel good to be back to the days when we laughed for very little reason...even if it's only for a moment. Appreciate the great comment and your reading of this poem about hearing the children's laughter once again. Humble Regards and Peace right back to you, too. MPM

I'm glad you could smell the summer breeze...and could hear the laughter of a fun summer day...especially...for you up there in Canada...at the moment (Winter). Michael Shane: Thanks Michael...Let's juz' keep that softer side stuff of "Manly" Poetry Man...on the "down-low"...Ok? (Ha...Juz' Kiddin'!) I guess even a "Manly" Poet has to explore all themes important to him...and as I spent many a year (and summer) working with kids...when I was younger...I would be amiss...if I did not include the laughter that I can still remember! Thank you for this great comment...as always. I really appreciate your support of my "Manly" (??) Poems...(of all different kinds), my friend...Have a good one...Signed, MPM

There is always a smiling side of the darker world - beautiful smiling children...

manlypoetryman profile image

manlypoetryman Hub Author 2 years ago

Moulik Mistry: I hear you on that one, my friend. Thank God we have learned to laugh through the dark side of things...and thank God for the children... who always know how to laugh. This phrase comes to mind: "Let the children's laughter...remind us...who we used to be..." Old Song by Whitney Houston (rough quote of the song). Humble Regards, MPM

De Greek: Yes it is, my friend...I know I have taken for granted just how much kids bring laughter to our world...till I sat at the edge of a Summer Camp's field in the off-season...and realized that there was something missing! Thanks for your comment...and for reading this one. Hope you are doing well? Sincerely, MPM

This is beautiful. Children add so much to the world that adults forget to remember in the everyday race to get somewhere fast. They remind us with laughter that sometimes we really need to slow down and just laugh, the world can wait a little while. Thanks for the beautiful poem and reminder of what is truly beautiful and important.

H.C. Porter: Thank you, H.C. Children add much to the world that we forget about as adults...Well Said! When we were kids...we didn't need an excuse to laugh...now we have to look around before we do...to see if it is appropiate! What we have we learned over the years...that laughter is good for the heart...so we need to laugh more as we grow older...right? See...we had it right when we were kids...in the first place! Thanks for your great comment...and for stopping in to read this one on "children's laughter". Humbly, MPM

Gosh I remember those days when we would laugh at anything and everything. Sometimes we just need to get in touch with our inner-child and we will find them again. I love your poems they are uplifting and full of life and joy. :)

AEvans: I know...those were sure some great days alright. As kids, we didn't need any reason to laugh and laugh and laugh! I say...your right...we do need to get in touch with our inner-child...wherever they went to...and laugh once again for the silliest of reasons! Thank you so much for your great comment and compliment. Sure do appreciate you stopping by for a visit...as always. Best of Fortune to you, AE!

If I had my child to raise all over again,

I'd finger paint more, and point the finger less,

I'd do less correcting and more connecting,

I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes,

I would take care to know less, and know to care more.

I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.

I'd stop playing so serious, and would seriously play.

I'd lie in more fields, and gaze at more stars.

I'd do more hugging and do less tugging.

I would be firm less often... and affirm much more.

I'd build self esteem first, and the house later.

I'd teach less about the love of power

And teach more about the power of love and laughter....
